In the Civil war, Officers were responsible for their own Uniforms and boots. Except for undergarments and only if they were unavailable for procuring by any other means, then they could order some undergarments for themselves along with the troops. As with Officers boots, they would spend four months of an average man’s wage on a cheap pair of boots. And as much as three years’ wages. Some of the bootmakers are still around in England. One man was appalled at how different our boot was from a colonial officer’s boot in a museum. It was not a single piece making the total tube and turndown flap. Almost the same boot can be had today. The boot tree was $1500 pounds, and the boots started at $ 5000 pounds. Fugawee makes things people can afford. We are not the cheapest, but we are quality.
